The Hollywood Awards Season reached its climax on March 4, during the 90th annual Academy Awards. From the moment the nominations were announced in January, the main battle took place between Guillermo del Toro's fiction “Water Form”, the war epic “Dunkirk” by Christopher Nolan and the crime drama “Three Billboards at the Ebbing, Missouri Border” by Martin MacDonagh.
Here is a list of the five winning films that received the 2018 Oscars.
5. Best Costumes - Phantom Thread
The melodrama about the London fashion designer Reynolds Woodcock amazes the audience with the variety and beauty of the outfits. However, the emphasis is not on them, but on the relationship of Woodcock with a young and ambitious Alma. She becomes a muse for the elderly and eccentric master.
The starring star is Daniel Day-Lewis, for whom The Phantom Thread may be the last film. The actor explained his departure from the cinema by the fact that the duties of the profession pressed him. And there is no inner confidence in the value of their own labor.
4. Best Actor - “Dark Times”
The historical war drama starring Gary Oldman also won an Oscar in the Best Makeup and Hair Styles nomination. In the center of the plot is Winston Churchill, who gained power in dark times for the whole world.
To age Oldman and turn him into Churchill, the legendary make-up artist Katsuhiro Tsuji and his team had to spend 4 hours daily. The actor had to shave his hair, because the real Winston Churchill had a modest hairstyle, and to create it, they used a wig-cap made of silicone and human hair.
The elderly actor did not gain weight to become like a chubby Churchill. Instead, he put on about 50% of his own weight. As a result, all these torments brought Oldman the well-deserved award of the American Film Academy.
3. Best actress - “Three billboards on the border of Ebbing, Missouri”
One of the best films of 2017-2018 brought Francis McDormand the Academy Award for the main female role. And Sam Rockwell - Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
The plot begins with the moment the character of McDormand, Mildred Hayes, goes to a local advertising agency with the intention of disgracing the sheriff of the city for his inaction.
Mildred is a vengeful figure, as if migrating from Greek tragedy straight to the Midwest of America. Her main goal is to find those responsible for the rape and murder of her daughter. And her struggle with the city authorities is just beginning.
Despite the fact that the picture is positioned as a drama, there was a place in it and comedies of morals, and a powerful social background and unusual characters, not at all like ordinary heroes and villains. This movie is recommended for viewing by those who have outgrown criminal action movies with boilerplate scripts.
2. The best sound of the year - "Dunkirk"
In May 1940, German troops advanced throughout France, forcing over 338 thousand Allied soldiers to retreat to the city of Dunkirk. To save them, the British government organized a grand rescue mission, which involved not only military vessels, but also civilians in small fishing boats.
This war drama, which was nominated in eight categories, won three, including a prize for best sound, best montage, and best sound montage.
1. The best film of the year - “The Form of Water”
The events of the best film, the 2018 Oscar winner, unfold in 1962, and at their epicenter is the cleaning girl Eliza Esposito. She works in a secret government lab that tests new technologies to help defeat the Soviet Union during the Cold War. The life of a lonely and dumb Eliza changes forever when she reveals the truth about the most unusual and top-secret project of the object.
According to the director of the film Guillermo del Toro, “The Form of Water” has become the most complex movie he has ever undertaken. And it took nine months to create the appearance of an amphibian man.
The film “Water Form” was among the nominees for the 2018 Oscars in 13 categories. She won a total of four awards, and Guillermo del Toro was voted Best Director of the Year.
